Control Glossary
Short explanations for the controls used across WordSifter. Select a question mark beside a control to open its definition directly.
- Starts With
- Match words beginning with the entered letters.
- Contains
- Match words containing the entered letters anywhere.
- Ends With
- Match words ending with the entered letters.
- Filter by Letter or Board Pattern
- Reveal and enable the letter-pool and board-pattern controls. You want this for Tile or Spelling Bee style searches.
- Letters Available
- Limit the letters a result word may use.
- Letters Required
- Require these letters somewhere in a result.
- Letters Excluded
- Reject result words containing these letters.
- Board Pattern
- Fix letters at positions and use a dot for an open position.
- Use Tile Rules
- Allow each available tile only once.
- Require All Letters
- Require every available letter in each result word.
- Count Board Letters as Available
- Use this if you are combining a "Letters Available" search with a board position search.
- Filter by Length
- Space or comma separated list of lengths to show.
- Minimum Length
- Only show words at least this long.
- Maximum Length
- Only show words no longer than this.
- Rack Tiles
- Enter the tiles available to a rack-based search.
- Wordle Position
- Enter a known letter for one fixed Wordle cell; leave it empty for a wildcard.
- Required Hive Letter
- The first Spelling Bee letter, which every result word must contain.
- Optional Hive Letter
- One of the other Spelling Bee letters (six in total).
- Pangram
- Require all seven Spelling Bee letters in the result. Combine with length=7 to search for perfect pangrams.
- Also Contains
- Require additional letters. Wordle only.
- Can't Contain
- Exclude these letters from results. Wordle only.
- Group By
- Cluster the current result list by a property.
- Sort By
- Order words within the current result list or group.
- Score System
- Choose the scoring table used for score grouping or sorting, Scrabble and WWF use different letter scores.
- Show a Word For
- Select the Word of the Day time period.
- Look Up a Local Time
- Select the localized time used for a time-period lookup.
